RULES

Before starting this event you must read, understand and agree to these rules!
If these rules are broken, you will not be permitted to participate in future events.

NO RACING

Levi Leipheimer’s King Ridge GranFondo is not a race. It is a ride. There will be no prize for being first across the line. This event is being created for you to experience the beautiful yet challenging roads on which Levi Leipheimer trains, not to go out, ride as hard as you can, and wreck your bike and yourself in the process.

NO FINISH LINE SPRINT

Absolutely no sprinting across the finish line will be permitted. Entry and exit to the Finley Center staging area will include rolling over speed bumps. Sprinting on your bicycle over these speed bumps can cause serious injury to yourself and other riders around you. There are NO PRIZES for finishing first or for beating your buddy across the line. Do not ride foolhardily back into the finish area.

BE CAREFUL

Many of the roads are challenging and technical, especially after passing through the town of Occidental. Be extremely careful riding your bicycle. There are places along King Ridge Road where people have injured themselves very badly because they have gone into a turn too fast. If you do not slow yourself soon enough you could find yourself descending some sections of road well beyond the speed limit. This is not safe. The turns on these roads are very sharp, very sudden, and occasionally have a decreasing radius (that means they get steeper and harder as you enter them). Do not underestimate how difficult this ride will be both in terms of the fitness it will require, but also the handling ability it demands of you on your bike.

STAY RIGHT

Many of the roads you will ride are very narrow, with no center line. They will be shared with vehicular traffic. Please ride single file when in a narrow section of road and please stay to your right. This is no different than the way you should ride on these roads at any other time. While CHP, medical, and official support vehicles will be along for the ride and working at intersections, the roads are not closed, and there will be occasional non-event vehicles traveling with and against you.  While traffic on these roads is minimal, it is still there.

RIDE COURTEOUSLY

We are conducting this event on some of the most remote roads in our county. Residents along this route have been informed of our event, but they are not used to coping with the impact of more than a handful of cyclists at any given time. On the day of this event, they are going to have to engage with riding groups more than 200 times larger than any amount of cyclists they normally encounter. Please be courteous to cars and let them pass safely and often by moving to the right whenever and as far as possible.

DO NOT LITTER

If you are seen throwing garbage or trash, gel packs, inner tubes, or any other disposable items onto the ground, you will be fined for littering. In California, this fine for littering is as much as $2,000 per occurrence. It is not our job as event promoters to clean up your trash and it is certainly not the job of those who live on these beautiful roads.

ENFORCEMENT

We will enforce all of these rules in order to ensure rider safety. There’s always a few people in any large group of cyclists who, for one reason or another, disobey the rules of the road. In a ride this big there can be serious consequences to this sort of recklessness; some could even be fatal. On-bicycle event marshals, motorcycles, and SAG staff will be riding with you to offer the best and safest experience possible. They will also ensure that all of these rules are being followed. If these rules are broken, you will be disqualified and not permitted to return next year.

CONDUCT

If at any time you treat others with disrespect, including staff, fellow riders, course marshals, photographers, motorcycle drivers, sag, tech support, or anyone else, you will be disqualified and not permitted to return next year.

HAVE FUN

These rules are not intended to make you feel as though your every move is going to be scrutinized. We want you to have fun, to enjoy yourselves, and be safe, so that you can leave with one of the most memorable experiences of your lifetime.

We love our staff! Seriously. There are a heap of people who have made this event the smashing success it is and without them, we'd be lost. Check out all our CAST & CREW.
